The doctor behind the poppy

On Wednesday, November 11, at 11 a.m., a lot of us will stop for two minutes of silence.

The poem we read every November was written by an Ontario-born doctor. John McCrae grew up in Guelph and studied medicine at U of T. In the spring of 1915 he was an army doctor near Ypres, in Belgium. On May 2, his close friend Alexis Helmer was killed and buried under a simple wooden cross, with poppies already blooming between the graves. The next day, McCrae wrote In Flanders Fields.

He couldn’t save his friend, so he gave him a voice. We still wear the poppy because of it.

This month I’m also thinking about the doctors and pharmacists who opened clinics before there was any playbook. A lot of what we run today, they built.

Looking ahead

Six new clinics on the way, and two of them are ours.

This one I’m proud of. We’re opening our 4th MedPros clinic in Scarborough, and our 5th in London. We spend most of our days helping other people build their clinics, so opening one of our own never gets old.

Here’s everything we’re building and launching across Ontario over the next several months:

  • MedPros-ownedOur 4th MedPros clinic, in Scarborough.
  • MedPros-ownedOur 5th MedPros clinic, in London.
  • Dr. Umair’s group’s first multi-specialty clinic, in Scarborough.
  • An endoscopy out-of-hospital (OHP) clinic in Whitby.
  • A multi-specialty sports medicine, rehab and precision medicine clinic in Niagara-on-the-Lake. More on this one in December.
  • A boutique multi-specialty clinic in downtown Toronto.

Dr. Umair’s group has secured a location in Scarborough for their first multi-specialty clinic, and we’ll be working with them to open it. Their goal is 10 clinics in the coming years, and we’re excited to help them get there, one location at a time.

Planning your next clinic?

We’re always launching new clinics, for physicians, specialists, pharmacists, allied health professionals and investors. After supporting over 20 clinics across Ontario, we’ve also got a good read on which spaces actually work for healthcare, and which ones only look good on paper.

If you’re planning a new practice or thinking about expanding, I’d love to hear what you have in mind. No pressure, just email me.

The Ontario Brief

FAMILY DOCTORS

Primary care team proposals close November 20

Quick reminder: proposals for Ontario’s new and expanded primary care teams are due by 5 p.m. ET on Friday, November 20, through your local Ontario Health Team and Primary Care Network. If you want in, call them this week.

By the numbers: Ontario’s primary care update (October 26)

  • 511,000+
Ontarians connected to a family doctor or primary care team since January 2025.
  • 470,000+
People cleared from the Health Care Connect waitlist.
  • 78
New or expanded primary care teams in the call for proposals now open, expected to connect 600,000 more people.
  • 67%
More family medicine graduates a year, as medical schools add 340 undergraduate seats and 551 postgraduate positions.
  • 2.5 million
Ontarians still without a family doctor, according to the OMA.

What it means: The province is putting real money behind team-based care, and it wants everyone connected by 2029. For family doctors and clinic owners, that means room to grow. It also means more patients, more staff and more billing to keep on top of. If you’re putting a team proposal together, make sure your admin side can keep up with the growth you’re planning.

Run the numbers before you sign

Thinking about a new clinic? Start with the math, not the space.

Our free Clinic Performance & ROI Calculator on medpros.ca lets you plug in your own numbers: physicians and billings, overhead, space and build cost, partner contributions, rent, staffing and financing. It shows your monthly net operating income, months to break even, and an estimate of year-one net cash.

It takes a few minutes. If the numbers work, email me and we’ll walk through them with you. If they don’t, you just saved yourself a lease.

From the MedPros floor

A thank-you, and a story.

Last week, one of our billing clients introduced us to a sister clinic group in London that was looking for help with their billing. No pitch, no ask. They just thought we’d be a good fit and made the connection.

That’s honestly how most of our best relationships have started: someone we already work with picks up the phone. So we want to say thank you properly. If you refer a clinic or business to MedPros and they become a client, we’ll make it worth your while. Terms apply, so just email me for the details. And if you’ve already sent someone our way, thank you. It means a lot.

We’re hiring.

We’re looking for a Business Development & Operations Coordinator to join us, supporting both MedPros and MedPros Construction. It’s a hands-on role: responding to and following up on new opportunities, supporting sales, proposals and agreements, helping move deals from first inquiry to signed, and then coordinating the steps that move projects and clients forward. There’s some marketing and lead generation too (social media, Canva, WordPress), but it isn’t strictly a digital marketing job.

It’s ideal for someone with about 1 to 3 years in business development, sales, operations or account coordination who communicates well, follows up consistently, stays organized and, most importantly, gets things done. A valid G licence and access to a vehicle are required, and there’s real room to grow with us.
